Around an hour south of Hamilton sits the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, a popular cave network home to thousands of glowworms that light up the caves to create a magical paradise just waiting for you to explore it.

A definite must-see natural site close to the Hamilton region, the Waitomo glowworm caves are visited by thousands of people every year and once you visit you’ll be able to see why it’s so popular.

Waitomo Glow Worm Caves

Hamilton Gardens

Home to more than 600 animals from New Zealand and around the world, Hamilton Zoo is a must-visit attraction for animal lovers and families looking to keep the kids entertained for a few hours.

Open 364 days a year – it’s closed on Christmas Day – you can enjoy watching the animals go about their day, learn about the animals, their environment and what it’s like to care for them from a zookeeper with various keeper talks throughout the day, and even come eye-to-eye or face-to-face with some of the zoo’s most interesting animals.

Hamilton Zoo

Location: 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera, Matamata, NZ

Located around a 45 minute drive from Hamilton, Hobbiton is one of the most popular attractions in New Zealand and is often a drawing card for international visitors to the country. 

The movie set of the famous Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Hobbiton will make you feel as though you’ve entered middle earth and are expecting Bilbo to greet you into his home – unfortunately this won’t happen.

Hobbiton

Waikato Museum

Location: 3331 Te Puia Rd, Kawhia, NZ

Kawhia Hot Water Beach

Location: 128 Seddon Road, Frankton, Hamilton, NZ

If you’re a fan of rugby then catching a game at Waikato Stadium in New Zealand should definitely be a bucket list item. 

The home of rugby in the Hamilton region, Waikato Stadium is a major venue used for big scale international games and events.

Home to the Chief’s rugby team and NRL’s Warriors, if you’re visiting during one of the sporting seasons make sure you try and nab yourself tickets to the big game.

The stadium itself is something to admire, built in 2002, it can cater for up to 25,000 visitors across the various different sections.

Location: Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park, Te Aroha, NZ

For incredible views over the great Waikato region, make your way up one of Mount Te Aroha’s various walking tracks. 

The Mountain is covered by the thick forest of Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park and acting as home to a number of interesting birds such as the kaka, kokako and tui. Rising 952 metres high, it is the highest point on the Kaimai-Mamaku range, and the best part about it is there are numerous tracks to follow suiting a range of fitness levels and expertise.

Some of the trails include the Te Aroha Domain Upper & Lower Walks, which are short 20 minute (one way) trails with the lower trail providing wheelchair access.

The Howarth Memorial Wetland Loop Walk is a 1 hour trail following the Waihou River through wetlands, and is accessed via Spur Street at the end of the Lawrence Avenue footbridge.

The Te Aroha Summit Track is one of the most popular tracks, taking around 3 hours to complete one way and traversing 3.9 kilometres of terrain, the track ascends around 1 kilometre to provide you with awesome views from Whakapipi Lookout.

Mt Te Aroha

In addition to the numerous cars in the museum, there are also a number of events held throughout the year that focus on the cars and life in the olden days.

The museum is also home to a popular diner; Jukebox Diner, a 1950s themed eatery serving up some of the classic dishes from home made waffles to towering burgers and milkshakes.

Run by a small, friendly team, you can visit the museum from 8am until 3pm on weekdays and 9am until 4pm on weekends.
